“It’s Not a Phase” — How the Nerdy Lifter Built an Unbreakable Habit | Reps & Reflections

YouTube video

Brandon Thompson — known around OTA as the Nerdy Lifter — hit 250 sessions at Olde Town Athlete, and if you know Brandon, you know that number is no accident.

A self-described theater kid who played violin through high school and skipped sports entirely, Brandon didn’t find his way into fitness through athletics. He found it the way a lot of people do: his jeans got tight and he was too cheap to buy new ones.

Before OTA, Brandon had the motivation in fits and spurts — a good January, a strong summer — but no staying power. Without structure, he’d miss one day and the whole week would unravel. He knew enough to get himself moving, but not enough to know if what he was doing actually mattered. YouTube workouts and self-programmed gym sessions got him to a 10K, but the wheels kept coming off. What he needed wasn’t more information — it was a framework, and someone to hold him accountable to it.

Coach Dylan provided exactly that. Starting with three days a week and foundational movements, Brandon’s program has evolved alongside his goals — from half marathon prep, to running the Texas Method and building serious strength in the squat, bench, and deadlift, to now training for a sub-four-hour full marathon. Along the way, a protein challenge introduced by Coach Jasmine rewired how he thinks about nutrition. His meal prep Monday is now a non-negotiable. In the past year alone, Dylan prescribed 192 sessions — and Brandon completed every single one of them.

The lesson Brandon carries out of 250 sessions is deceptively simple: figure out what you actually want, and then go get it — no passivity allowed. He’s proof that consistency isn’t a personality trait you either have or don’t. It’s what happens when you find something you genuinely like, surround yourself with people who hold you to it, and decide — for real — that it’s not a phase.
